BALI DELI BISTRO – SEMINYAK
This fabulous delicatessen in Jalan Kunti is what the expatriates
here had been longing for. We can now buy a vast range of imported
foods, including some very appetising meals in a terrific garden
ambience at surprisingly low prices so if you are planning to
go there for lunch, go early to ensure that you get a table. It
is open for dinner but this doesn’t yet seem to have caught
on in a big way. However, an expansion is planned so watch out
for this in the next few months and it could become the place
to see and be seen!
HARRIS CAFÉ – HARRIS RESORT, KUTA
A simple and friendly but unique outlet with fresh interior decoration
in hues of orange, yellow and olive green, Haris Café serves
a medley of International, Asian, Indonesian and Balinese dishes.
There is also a display of Indonesian delicacies such as Rujak
Manis or Cendol at different times of the day.
JP’S WARUNG CLUB - SEMINYAK
This establishment has earned a good reputation for its excellent,
reasonably-priced food, great cocktails and live music every nigh.
It is open for breakfast, lunch and diiner so it is a perfect
refuge from shopping during the day but it livens up at night
with entertainment from a variety of local bands. The international
menu come highly recommended.
KORI - KUTA
Kori has been offering good food and good wines for many years
and is one of the best established restaurants in Bali. The food
is not of gourment standard it is pleasant and not over-priced.
The main attraction of Kori is that it is well placed in Kuta,
it has a pleasant environment and very friendly staff. Eating
out isn’t just about the food, it is the whole experience
and Kori can provide what most pleople want.
KURA-KURA GRILL & BAR – SEMINYAK
Not to be confused with the restaurant at The Oberoi Hotel, this
place has been serving good food for almost 7 years and the bar
is a focal point for many expatriates. Friendly staff and reasonable
prices help to make this a very popular venue.

Warung Tugu restaurant, Indonesia's former
president Megawati Soekarno Putri's favorite
LOLA – KEROBOKAN
This is a relatively new restaurant but it seems to be doing
well and maybe this is due to the fact that it offers French cuisine
in a very elegant and fashionable environment at prices that won’t
break the bank. There are some excellent wines on offer here and
the dessert are brilliant. Lola is also open for lunch with a
very good set menu.
LUMUT CAFÉ & GALLERY - SANUR
The food and the atmosphere here offer something for everyone.
The location, Jalan Danau Tamblingan, is ideal to attract guests
from a variety of hotels in the area and with both air-conditioned
and open air dining sections, you can take your pick in this large,
two-storey restaurant. The food, which is blend of Eastern and
Western favourites, is most definitely good value for money and
the service is fast and efficient. A small art gallery displays
the work of young artists in Bali and the paintings ‘overflow’
from the gallery into the dining areas.
POPPIES – KUTA
It will amazing if you don’t find something to suit your
taste here as there is such a wide range of items on the menu,
including pizza, seafood, steaks, satay, sushi and soup! The garden
surroundings with flowers, pools and waterfalls are attractive
and the staff are friendly and efficient. Poppies is one of the
original restaurants of Kuta, founded in 1973, and it is still
as popular as ever. The gang where it is situated is now known
as Poppies Lane.
RUMOURS – SEMINYAK
It is always packed and if you want to know why, just drop in
and peruse the menu; you will wonder how they can offer such good
quality food at such low prices. Steaks, ribs and pasta plus free
use of the pool table and a vibrant atmosphere have made Rumours
a real success story. However, if you like to talk to your dining
companions, forget it --- the music is very laud!
TERAZO – UBUD
This is an Asian / Mediterranean bistro in the heart of Ubud,
Jalan Suweta, serving exceptionally good food at reasonable prices
in an up-market yet casual setting. Well worth a visit for their
tasty food and good service.
VERANDA – SEMINYAK
This delightful restaurant suffers from being too well hidden;
it is tucked away behind the garish Lips Café in Seminyak
and offers some spectacular dishes at very affordable prices.
The chef/owner, Gunawan, has worked for many years in Sweden and
Switzerland and presents international dishes with a very slight
accent upon Swedish cuisine. A recent development has been the
introduction of an Indonesian 3-course set meal. Veranda is well
worth a visit and you will not be disappointed.
THE TUESDAY NIGHT PIZZA CLUB – SEMINYAK
A very successful venture, the restaurant recently introduced
five new types of pizza which include ‘Blue Velvet’
, with blue cheese and bacon, and another called ‘Ocean
Eleven’ , which is a tasty blend of tune and garlic prawns.
Some good cocktails are also to be had here so why not checkit
out?
THE LUSCIOUS – KUTA
This strangely named restaurant opened short time ago and it
is difficult to assess what type of people they aretrying to attract.
It looks as if it could is not so pleasant. However, the food
is very good and not over-priced so it could be worthwhile dropping
in to check out the menu. It is one of the very few restaurants
in Bali to provide under-cover parking; this is great during the
day if you don’t want your car to be like an oven when you
return to it!
UN’S – KUTA
Why is it that the best restaurants are always so difficult to
find? Un’s is behind the Kuta Made’s Warung and the
food here is excellent. Try the Entrecote Café de Paris
for which the restaurant is famous. This long-established business
offers a variety of musical entertainment, but frequently features
Batak music, and the walls are hung with an electic variety of
paintings by local artists. Prices are reasonable and the choices
of food are wide-ranging.
FRANGIPANI RESTAURANT at THE OBEROI HOTEL – SEMINYAK
This could be described as a beach-front version of the KURA-KURA,
serving many of the same delicious items, and an idyllic setting
for a relaxing lunch while you watch the huge waves crashing on
to the shore.
BUBBA GUMP SHRIMP COMPANY – KUTA CENTRE
The place is located in the Kuta Shopping Complex in Jalan Kartika
Plaza and appears to be trying to attract the Japanese market.
The casual American dining concept is based on the film ‘
Forest Gump’ and the indea is to appear as if the main character
and his friend Bubba have established their own Lousiana Shrimp
restaurant! They offer Shrimps, Ribs, Steaks, Burgers and sandwiches
at moderate prices.
BARANDI – UBUD
Barandi opened earlier this year as a nice bar with fairly ordinary
food but it is now offering a good range of menu items pm the
upper level and it seems that they have corrected the original
concept. Things change quickly in Bali and Barandi is now one
of the trendier places to be seen at in Ubud. It is popular with
local residents and tourists.
GAYA – SAYAN , UBUD
The Gaya gallery is well known for its exhibitions of local and
foreign art-work but have you ever eaten at the Gaya restaurant?
The food is excellent and the prices are affordable so you should
make the effort to call in to this boat-shaped building for lunch.
They serve the best spaghetti A.O.P. in Bali plus many other delicious
items. Watch out for changes and improvements implemented by their
new restaurant manager, Dewa.
SUKU at THE CONRAD BALI RESORT & SPA, TANJUNG BENOA
Suku is just one of a number of restaurants at the Conrad where
the food is always so good. Try it on a Tuesday evening when you
can watch the Rama Sita dance performance and sample the special
menu; ‘Hot, a Spicy Odyssey’. You will get a four-course
dinner comprising an appetiser plate, a soup, a main set which
could include beef rendang, chicken stir-fried in basil, chillies
and lime juice, crispy fried fish in red curry and mixed vegetable
cooked with turmeric and coconut. The dessert of green tea panna
cotta with fuji apple sorbet completes this gastronomic delight
and the whole meal will cost you only Rp. 160.000 and there’s
a half-price version for children.
EIGHT derajat SOUTH – AT THE CONRAD BALI RESORT & SPA,
TANJUNG BENOA
The theme here is ‘attitude with latitude’ and the
name of the restaurant comes from the location of Bali 8 derajat
south of the equator. This is an absolute beach-front restaurant
with delicious barbeque cuisine and a variety of gourmet pizzas,
salads, sandwiches and Asian specialities. In the evening, fresh
sea breezes create a romatic ambience and there are selections
of fresh seafood cooked to your liking.
INDUS – UBUD
Indus restaurant is a five minute drive from the heart of Ubud;
just beyond the Campuan bridge. Perched on a ridge, it enjoys
majestic views of Mount Agung and the Campuan valley. The inventive
menu draws on a gentle mix of east and west in a gracious Balinese-Indian
setting. Popular dishes include pumpkin samosas, warm tofu salad
with roasted beetroot, Budda’s delight and the nasi campur
always pleases.
The Coconut crème caramel is one of ubud’s most seductive
desserts and all menu items are matched to a good selection of
Australian wines.
MA JOLY – TUBAN
This restaurant’s advertisements state that great restaurants
are not always in the obvious places and this is so true; who
would expect fine dining in Tuban, so close to the airport but
reports indicate that Ma Joly is certainly worth visiting at its
beach-front location. It is open for breakfast, right through
to dinner and can be found in Jalan Wana Segara.
WUNDERBAR – UBUD
This is a German restaurant in Japan Pengosekan and its name
simply means ‘wonderful’ . The chef describes it as
European style fine dining with lots of steak, sausage, salad
and ice-cream comes in some terrific flavours such as forest-berries
and teramisu and is excellent. The design of the soup on the menu
and, of course, there is German Beer on the drinks list. The hone-made
restaurant is unconventional with bright colours and no right-angles
anywhere! Great for lunch because it is air-conditioned but even
better at night for the atmosphere.
RIVER CAFÉ – AT MAYA UBUD RESORT
Deep in the tropical rain forest, on the banks of the Petanu
River, sits the open air River Café at the Maya. Timbered
floors and open kitchen design contribute to a casual ambience
complimented by the well balanced healthy fusion and spa cuisine
served. For the calorie-conscious, there are fresh organic vegetable
salads, Tasmanian salmon on a grilled vegetabl sandwich, chilled
fresh tomato potage with ruccola oil or prawns on seaweed sushi
and miso wasabi dressing. Sizzling hot stones of seared tuna or
free range chicken filet; tuna carpaccio and whole wheat crust
with an Italian flavour and a not too sinful array of desserts.
Relaxed and informal; tranquil and serene; an experience to enjoy
during a visit to Ubud.
AROMAS CAFÉ - KUTA
One of the very few exclusively vegetarian restaurants in Bali
, Aromas offers some very tempting items which include Indian
Thali-style dishes and even the hardened carnovores will enjoy
the food here. There are also some great juices and cakes and
this is a good place for lunch or just an afternoon snack. The
staff are all friendly and the service is very efficient so maybe
this is why they heve been in Business for so long.
POCO LOCO – LEGIAN
Poco Loco seems to have been running forever, tucked away in
Jl. Padma Utara, and has always been popular but, in recent years,
it has improved enormously and it is now a highly-recommended
restaurant serving tasty Mexican cuisine at prices well within
the average tourist or expat’s budget.
CHI CHI’S GRILL AND CANTINA - TUBAN
Easy to get to for anyone one in the south Kuta/Tuban area as
everyone knows the Kuta Centre in Jalan Kartika Plaza. All the
favourite Mexican dishes are served here, along with some terrific
Margaritas. A Very friendly atmosphere contributes to the enjoyment.
TJ’S – KUTA
For may years, TJ’s has been providing excellent and tasty
Mexican food in the centre of Kuta and it serves some of the best
Margaritas in Bali. Chack it out in Poppies Lane 1.
