This is the only restaurant serving all American cuisine in an
eclectic style. There are Cajun, Mexican, and New England recipes
which makes this a totally different experience. Delicous food
on the beachfront at Santika Villas in Seminyak.
Ary’s warung – Ubud
This is one of Bali’s more creative restaurants; a two-storey
modern style building in the main street of Ubud. It has a wine

The menu at this outstanding hotel restaurant offers high quality
cuisine combines with some magnificent views over the Ayung River
valley. You can be certain of an excellent dining experience here
in very comfortable surrounding and with impeccable service.
Gado-Gado – Seminyak
It used to be a discothèque but now it is a very stylish
beach side restaurant. The food is great, the location is ideal
and the bar is a place to be seen. Not too cheap but affordable
for the average budget and it has some great beach views.

Kafe Warisan – Kerobokan
See the longer article in this issue but every one agrees that
the food ad Kafe Warisan is excellent. Service and ambience are
outstanding and although it isn’t one of the cheapest restaurants
in Bali, it offers a very good value when compared with some of
the more expensive eateries on the island.
Kura-Kura at the Oberoi Hotel – Seminyak
One of the longest established hotel on the western side of Bali,
The Oberoi has been delighting discriminating guests for more
than a quarter of century. Consistency is a keyword in describing
this elegant and exotic hotel and some the staff have been there
since it first opened. This restaurant is all one would expect
from an establishment of this class and dining in the Kura-Kura
is an extremely pleasurable experience. Surprisingly it is not
as expensive as many people imagined and there is no additional
tax or service charge.
Ku De Ta – Petitenget
The success of this place is legendary and it packs in the crowds
every night. Very much an ‘in place’ and people go
there to be seen as much as for the good Australian-style cuisine
and the stunning setting. It is not cheap for an evening of drinking
but the breakfast menu is very good value so try this first and
see if you like the place. You will almost certainly return for
dinner or for sunset drinks.
Lamak – Ubud
The dramatic architecture, extensive menu and wine list and an
air-conditioned lounge make this popular venue for anything from
just a few drinks to a very satisfying dinner. The food emphasis
is quite strongly on Balinese and Indonesian cuisine but there
are examples of other Asian recipes and some excellent European-style
food. The restaurant is on two floors, is well ventilated and
has a great walk-in climate controlled wine cellars.
Mozaic – Ubud
By far the most attractive thing about Mozaic is the setting
in a beautiful garden but the food is very good too. Some people
say that the chef/owner, Chris Salans is the best chef on the
island although the past couple of years, have seen the arrival
in Bali of competition from many other outstanding culinary talent.
Prices are a little high for both food and wine but Mozaic is
very popular.
Ocean terrace restaurant - Sheraton Laguna Nusa Dua
Appropriately named, this casual restaurant by the beach offers
diners as well as one of the most breath taking views of the Indian
ocean. The menu is a potpourri of culinary delights from Tepanyaki,

all set in an architecturally unique open air restaurant with
Balinese high ceiling structure, wooden floor and remarkable see
through walkways. Alternatively choose to sit under the stars
and dine in the sounds of the crashing ocean waves.
Paul’s place – Seminyak
At night it looks like a fairy place with thousands of lights,
set in Jalan Laksamana, close to the Oberoi Hotel. Inside, there
are many different place to sit such as the romantic nooks and
crannies, lesehan floor seating, and a roof-top area open to the
skies. Originally known for its Pan-Asian cuisine, there is now
a Thai kitchen which owner Paul Meng describe as a restaurant
within a restaurant. Whether you want lunch, afternoon tea, sunset
drinks or a candle lit dinner, this Pan Asian & Fusion bistro,
Boutique & Galleru will have something to offer you.
PALA – SANUR
Outside of the hotels, there are not so many fine-dining establishments
in Sanur but Pala aims to present excellent gourment food in a
comfortable, well-designed and air-conditioned environment. One
of the main attractions here is the Wine Bar which offers a large
variety of good wines, all of which are kept in ideal conditions
and the staff can give you good advice on what to choose.
PERGOLA – SANUR
This is a relatively new restaurant in Jalan Danau Toba that
offers some terrific low-priced dishes in comfortable and attractive
surroundings. A special lunch menu of two courses for Rp. 50,000
is exceptional value for money and the food is of a very high
standard; try the mussels provencale and the roast lunch on Sundays.
The chef/owner here is enthusiastic about his work almost to the
point of obsession and he also affers cookery courses; including
special courses for local children; well worth a visit for lunch
and you will want to return for dinner.
SEASALT – AT THE ALILA, MANGGIS, KARANGASEM
The dining concept of this restaurant has been reinvented with
a dedication to fresh, healthy, ‘real cuisine’. Seafood
is feafured throughout the menu of East Balinese specialities,
with ‘Mr. Wangi’s snapper curry’ an essential
item to try; or go for the ‘rujak campur’ with white
mango and tamarind. For a special occasion, there is Seasalt’s
Lobster Platter, which is the ultimate dive into seafood decadence.
To finish, the durian crème brulee will be something to
remember.
THE RESTAURANT AT THE LEGIAN – SEMINYAK
This is fine dining at its finest. Maybe it isn’t cheap
but it is just so good. The Legian Hotel’s new chef has
devised a wonderful menu that defies description. His blends of
tastes and textures are just stunning and you really have to taste
to believe it. Not only is the food of outstanding qualitybut
the setting, with its ocean view, is spectacular.
THE LIVING ROOM – PETITENGET
Where every table is different and your chair may or may not
be high or low enough but you won’t care ! Festooned with
white netting and with a myriad candles on the outside tables,
the Living Room is very picturesque. The food is eclectic but
always good and the popularity of this place is evidenced by the
number of guests is attracts.
