* Cafés/Warung *
CAFÉ MOKA – Seminyak and Banjar Anyar
These two cafés are mostly lunchtime venues serving some
excellent food at low prices. Their bread and pastries are delicious
and the services is fast and efficient. Food to take away is an
additional service so if you fancy a portion of ‘ Hachis
Parmentier ’ – Shepherd’s Pie in English, you
can just take it home and put it in your freezer until the time
comes to microwave and serve it. If you have forgotten to buy
the milk, no problem, Café Moka can sell you some.
Hard Rock Café - Kuta
This American icon dominating the road along Kuta’s beachfront
remains a major attraction for young tourists and families, and
the café serves the usual western favourites such as nachos,
gourmet sandwiches, burgers and imported steaks. With views over
the busiest part of Kuta Beach, it is a great spot for people-watching
(or a surf check!) while enjoying home-style food in a lively
atmosphere.
Made’s Warung – Seminyak & Kuta
The Original Made’s warung in Kuta has been there forever
but the Seminyak warung is never. There’s no argument about
the quality of the food and the reasonable prices but they do
need focus on service. If two people go there for a meal together,
they expect to get their food at the same time so a half-hour
gap is noty acceptable. However, Made’s Warung still draws
the crowds so they must have something.
KOPI POT – KUTA
One of the reasins many people tried Kopi Pot the first time
is that it has a large car-parking area at the back but they soon
realised that there were other attractions such as ver good food,
friendly and polite service and it provides a strategic viewpoint
over the busy Jalan Legian from the upper floor. Don’t be
deterred by its proximity to the main road because traffic noise
doesn’t to be able to penetrate the shrubbery along the
front wall. This is one of Kuta’s oldest restaurants serving
western style food and it has survived well.
Stadium Café – Kuta/Tuban
This is definitely one for the boys. A large collection of sporting
paraphernalia, massive project screen and street-front open bar
make stadium a popular spot for watch football and motor racing,
while the kitchen delivers simple, tasty fare in value for money
portions. This of a US-style dinner serving everything from port
ribs and burger to oxtail soup plus asian noodles. This combination
of colourful atmosphere and good ‘oub grub’ has seen
stadium survive the test of time.
Le Bake Shop – Kuta
This is a sort of expatriate institution situated close to the
simpang siur roundabout. People meet here for breakfast, lunch
and whatever takes your fancy. The appeal is partly the innovative
international cuisine but also the fact that Le Bake Shop was
one of the first lunch time venues with air conditioning. An ideal
place for business meeting or conducting job interviews while
enjoying some excellent food at sensible prices. The shop has
some great bread and pastries and their cake are delicous.
Murni’s Warung – Ubud
Ubud is often neglected by food guides but murni’s is an
attractive restaurant, situated on a number of levels on a riverbank,
which has been providing good food at sensible prices for more
years than I can count. An extensive menu includes Indonesian,
Asian and International dishes, all at affordable prices and cooked
with the sort of attention one expects in Bali.
The fact that it is sometime difficult to get a table here is
a good indication of its popularity. |
