All sickness and human accidents are attributed
to the direct intervention of evil spirits which have found a favorable
soil to work in. A Balinese will always if possible avoid the scene
of disease or accidents, because a sick or dying person will tend
to suck in power from his surroundings, and it is unwise to encroach
on the sphere of the invisible being which has caused the accident
and disturbed the equilibrium of life.
Evil spirits belong therefore to the scheme of things, and must be
propitiated by special offerings. The village priest and wizard know
all about these, for there is a vast traditional literature devoted
to such matters. Wherever there is a feast in Bali, in the house temple
(Sanggah) or village temple (Poera Desa) or 'inner' temple (Poera
Dalem), you will see, besides the numerous splendid offerings, shaped
with the utmost ingenuity of design and sometimes rising in towers
six to eight feet high, some offerings spread out on the ground, which
in comparison with the others seem shapeless and almost untidy. These
are the banten ring sor or metjaroe, to propitiate evil spirits. Every
five days each house must be protected by laying such offerings on
the road outside the entrance, and every 'fifteenth day' (kadjeng
klion), which is very powerful magically, they must be on a larger
scale. At night you will see all along the village street the glow
of crescent coconut |
