| In the wayang-wong the spoken word, the
music and the art of movement are blended into a single whole. The
repertoire is drawn from the same sources as the lakons of the wayang-purwa.
This type of wayang testifies impressively to the high standard
of culture prevailing at the court of Mataram, which to some extent
survived subsequently in the kratons in the 'principalities'.
In addition to the dances described above, which must be classed
with the courtly art of the kratons, there are folk-dances of many
kinds. Most of these are accompanied by gamelan instruments, such
as the djaran kepang: two persons dance with figures of horses plaited
from stalks of bamboo. Their movements give the impression that
they are riding these horses.
