Every attempt has been made to secure complete
information for all art reproduced in this catalogue. This, however,
has not been possible in all cases due to the general lack of documentation
in Indonesia, the absence of any public modern art museum, and the
great mix and number of lending institutions and individuals. In addition,
the spelling of Indonesian surnames may vary depending on past and
present usage; because of this we have not aimed at any unified consistency.
This catalogue is as much a call for serious study and research on
modern Indonesian art as it is an accompaniment to the exhibition.
In addition, it is hoped that this publication will help promote artistic
and cultural relations between Indonesia and the United States. The
Festival of Indonesia has been a remarkable catalyst in this regard.
Future foreign scholarship on this art, translation of indigenous
writing and many more related exhibitions, large and small, will hopefully
emerge in the United States and Europe and bring Indonesian artists
so deservedly to the attention of the modern world.
