Tanah Lot Temple, Tabanan Regency, Bali
One of Bali's most noted sites, in Tabanan, just
across the boundary of Badung regency, is easily reached from
Bali's Sounthern tourist centres. Just follow the main road and
the sign, turn left at the Kediri village, and you will be there.
Or from the kerobokan junction, turn west towards Canggu village.
Follow the signs to Le Meridien Bali Resort & Spa, which sits
adjacent to Bali's most famous and most photographed temple, the
Tanah Lot temple.
Set apart from the land on a stone pedestal carved
by incoming tides, Tanah Lot's solitary black towers and tufts
of foliage spilling over the cliffs recall the delicacy of chinese
paintings, although the gauntlet of souvenirs stalls and hawkers
on the temple approach may diminish this image. In caves surrounding
the temple dwell striped sacred snakes, discreetly left undisturbed
by Balinese. Only worshippers are allowed into the temple, but
visitors get dramatic view from the adjacent hill, especially
at sunset.
Tanah lot is attributed to the 16th century priest
DangHyang Nirartha. During his travels. Nirartha saw a light emanating
from a point on the west coast and come to this spot to meditate.
The disciple of a local spiritual leader became fascinated by
Nirartha and began to study with him. This angered by local priest,
who filled with jealousy challenged Nirartha. The unflappable
Nirartha simply moved his meditation spot into the middle of the
ocean, and this point became known as Tanah Lot or Land in the
Middle of the Sea.
