PURA GOA LAWAH (BAT CAVE TEMPLE) - BATUKARU EASTERN
BALI HIGHLIGHT TOURS
A blunted sense of smell is a distinct advantage when visiting
Bat Cave. The bats cling to the cave face, awaiting for the
feeding time at night. The bats hold on to the cave walls and
each others amid an ear piercing noise. The cave is a holy area
with cloth draped shrines at the entrance. It has a historical
significance too, for in the 1904 balinese kings confered here
to plan strategy agains the invasion of Dutch.
The cave filled with thousands of Bats-their bodies packed
so close together that the upper wall surface resembles undulating
mud. Goa lawah is a holy temple and surrounding shrines protect
the entrance. The cave is said to extent all the way to Pura
besakih and may link to underground river that emerges,
it is being said, at pura goa (cave temple) in the besakih complex.
