| The Opening Act
The barong, a symbol of good, elegance and simplicity is an illustration
of the lion, as the king of the jungle. Balinese perceived the
life of lion as elegance and strong, as well as proud and wise.
The lion here dance by 2 people, and very much similar to the
chinese tradition of Barong dance.
The barong in this opening act showing off its elegance, his
fangs, his jumping ability, his gesture and many other 'animal'
like attitude i.e. scratching and playing with his tail.
The monkey in the other hand, is a character of friendship to
the barong. It entertains and annoy the barong, as well as creating
the atmosphere of entertainment to the audience. As a matter of
fact, many Balinese (hinduism) epics illustrates the strong bond
of Human (kings) and monkeys such as the Ramayana story, which
King Rama cooperates with monkey king Hanuman to overcome the
evil of Rahwana, or in Buddhist mythology of Sun Go Kong, the
monkey king. (Please note that Hindu and Buddhist has many similarities.
To us Hindu, Buddha is one of the 9 Awatara (Avatar) or God Manifestation
that transformed to human form when the world is in danger).
A 3 masked dancers then appear, representing men making palmwine
in the forest, whose child is killed by the Barong. The 3 men
get angry and attack the Barong which is helped by the monkey.
During the fight one of the 3 men's nose was chopped off by the
monkey
